History of the School

The school opened in 1962 and the original accommodation, which has been enhanced by a substantial building programme of extension, reconstruction and renovation completed in 1982, provides the school with full, modern facilities within one compact site. These facilities include a well equipped Library and Information Centre; a games hall, gymnasiums, fitness suite, drama studio, swimming pool and extensive playing fields; a purpose built suite of music rooms and eight computer rooms. In February 2008 the school completed works to allow for disabled access by fitting a lift into the main block taking users from the ground floor to the 2nd with ease.

The high school also has a hierarchy of students, whereby 5th and 6th year students are elected by teachers to be prefects. There is also a Head Boy, Head Girl and Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl who are elected by the senior body of students.

School Curriculum Levels

Curriculum levels are split into Standard Grade (Foundation, General & Credit), and Higher Still (Intermediate 1 & Intermediate 2 & Higher & Advanced Higher). Availability depends on subject and demand by students, especially at higher and much more so at advanced higher levels.

Based on which subjects are chosen in year groups S2 S3, S4, S5 and S6 pupils sit exams.

The second and third year exams are to allow teachers to see at what level students are working on and at which level students can take these subjects the following year if they wish to do so.

However, The fourth, fifth and sixth year exams are regarded very highly as these marks will determine the students future career choices.

House system

The pupils of Glenwood High School are separated into four different houses and each have their own house colour.

The Houses are:

House captains are 6th years and their deputies are 5th years. The captains are elected by the 5th and 6th year students of their corresponding house.
